A Look Back: Dec. 18

1932: The Associated Press names Gene Sarazen as the year's most outstanding athlete after winning the U.S. and British Opens.

1933: Bobby Jones announces that he will compete in an invitation tournament at his new Augusta National Golf Club next March.

1938: Harold McSpaden wins the Miami Open.

1944: Byron Nelson is named The Associated Press' outstanding athlete after winning eight times on the PGA Tour.

1971: Bobby Jones, winner of 13 major championships and the Grand Slam in 1930, dies at age 69 following a 20-year bout with a crippling spinal ailment that gradually paralyzed his arms and legs.
