1966: Ted Makalena wins the Hawaiian Open.

1977: Leonard Thompson wins the Pensacola Open by two shots over Curtis Strange.

1983: Mark McCumber wins the Pensacola Open by four strokes over Lon Hinkle and Mark Lye.

1984: Curtis Strange wins the Southwest Golf Classic by two strokes over Mark O'Meara.

1994: Mark McCumber wins the Tour Championship, defeating Fuzzy Zoeller in a playoff.

Business
Adams Golf is unable to escape the effects of a sagging economy, citing a net loss of just more than $7 million and a drop in net sales for the company's third quarter. Non-recurring charges of more than $3 million in the quarter also hurt the bottom line, but the company's nine-month report shows net sales up more than 25 percent over last year.

Sam Torrance, Europe's Ryder Cup captain, officially opened the aptly-named Torrance Course, his first foray into course design, on Oct. 15 at St Andrews Bay Resort -- the new $80 million golf resort just south of St. Andrews, Scotland. The 7,020-yard, par-72 course sits on cliff tops overlooking St. Andrews.

The LPGA and Gateway Sports Promotion Group announce the addition of the Kellogg-Keebler Classic at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill., a Chicago suburb, May 27-June 2, 2002. The Kellogg-Keebler Classic will be the first LPGA Tour stop in the Chicago area since the 2000 U.S. Women's Open and the first regular Tour stop since the 1994 Chicago Challenge.

Callaway Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam wins her seventh event of 2001 -- the Cisco Ladies Match Play World Championship in Japan -- and locks up a fourth Rolex Player of the Year award. Sorenstam uses 11 Callaway golf clubs and a Callaway golf ball. In other tour news, Per-Ulrik Johansson used an Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter to secure his 2002 PGA Tour card while Doug Tewell and Tohru Taniguchi used new HX balls to rack up second-place finishes on the Senior PGA Tour and Japanese PGA Tour, respectively.

Winner of the 2001 Senior Tour Championship Bob Gilder uses Black Widow cleats from Softspikes, as did 28 others in the field. Black Widow cleats were also worn by the winners of all four of the major championships on the Senior PGA Tour in 2001.
