A Look Back: Oct. 16

1960: Billy Casper wins his third-straight PGA Tour event, winning the Orange County Open.

1977: Hale Irwin wins the Texas Open by two strokes over Miller Barber.

1983: The United States wins the Ryder Cup matches 14 1/2-13 1/2 dues to large part to Lanny Wadkins' halve with Spain's Jose Maria Canizares in the final singles match.

1988: Corey Pavin breezes to the Texas Open title, finishing at 21-under-par and winning by eight strokes Robert Wrenn.

1994: Bob Estes wins the Texas Open by a shot over Gil Morgan.

Kirk Currie Signature Putters ships its new long putter, the "Red." Like all the putters in the line -- which all bear the names of Texas rivers -- Red uses three interchangeable sole plates which can be changed to alter the weight and can be custom fitted for length. The company will also ship a new putting stroke trainer called the Kure on Nov. 1.

The new PJ Driver from Liquidmetal Golf, named for Professor Bill Johnson who was co-inventor of the LIquidmetal alloy, features a 330-cc head with a slightly flatter face to bring mis-hits back to the center of the fairway. Four tournament winners last week used Callaway Golf equipment to earn their victories. Ben Crane used 11 Callaway Golf clubs to win the Buy.com Tour's Gila River Classic while Sammy Rachels used a Callaway 3-wood to win The Transamerica on the Senior Tour, Bob Estes carried an Odyssey putter in his victory at the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas and Jorge Berendt won the Cannes Open on the European Tour with an ERC II driver.

With his win in the Cisco World Match Play Championship last weekend, Ian Woosnam became the 14th tournament winner to play the Maxfli A10 golf ball since it was introduced in July. In addition to the ball, Woosnam uses Maxfli Revolution irons and a Maxfli Revolution wedge.

Swingless Golf begins demo days on the west coast to promote its Swingless Golf Club that allows people of all ages and physical abilities to hit drives from 50 to 200 yards without swinging. The company hopes to open the game up to those who cannot otherwise drive a golf ball.

Dunlop Slazenger Group Americas files a lawsuit for unfair competition against Callaway Golf, claiming the latter has used proprietary techniques and information taken from DSGA to make its golf balls. Earlier this month, Callaway sued DSGA for patent infringement.

USGA Championships will continue to air on NBC under an extension of the current contract between that network and the United States Golf Association. Besides 30 hours of U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur coverage, NBC will broadcast a review show of the U.S. Open, expand the U.S. Open preview show and add a 90-minute taped show featuring either the U.S. Junior Amateur or the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship starting in 2003.

Ending a 101-year tradition of starting from the first tee, the United States Golf Association adopts a two-tee start for the U.S. Open in 2002. The USGA's Executive Committee also approved two-tiered qualifying for the 2002 U.S. Women's Open and extended the final match of the 2002 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links to 36 holes.
