A Look Back: Oct. 9

1965: On the strength of its singles lineup, the United States wins 10 1/2 of 16 points on the final day to defeat Great Britain-Ireland 19 1/2 to 12 1Ž2 and win the Ryder Cup at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

1977: Amy Alcott wins the Houston Exchange Clubs Classic by five strokes over Carol Mann, Donna White, and Kathy Postlewait.

1983: Ronnie Black defeats Sam Torrance in a playoff to win the Southern Open Invitational.

1988: Tom Purtzer defeats Mark Brooks in a playoff to win the Southwest Golf Classic.

1994: Rick Fehr shoots a final-round 68 to win the Walt Disney World Oldsmobile Classic by two strokes over Craig Stadler and Fuzzy Zoeller.

Events
Because of military action taken by the United States and its allies, Sports Today and the LPGA decide to cancel the Sports Today CJ Nine Bridges Classic that was to have been played Oct. 19-21 in Korea. The LPGA tournament will next be played in 2002.

The Presidents Cup, originally scheduled for November 2002 in South Africa, will be played Nov. 18-23, 2003. Along with the Ryder Cup, the event was pushed back a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

In testing done by Golf Test USA with 10 fairway woods, Natural Golf's Beryllium Copper Fairway Wood ranks first in distance, feel and appearance, beating out clubs made by Cleveland, Adams and Orlimar. The company's Pipeline 450 irons and Tour Hammer driver also received high marks.

CHAMP's ScorpionSpikes were on the feet of another LPGA tournament winner when Dorothy Delasin claimed the trophy at last week's Samsung World Championship. ScorpionSpikes have been used in six of the last 10 wins on the tour.

With David Toms' victory at the Michelob Championship last weekend, the number of events won by PGA Tour players wearing Softspikes' Black Widow cleats jumps to 17. Black Widow spikes also outnumbered all other plastic spikes at the Virginia tour stop.

Architect Bobby Weed agrees to appear on The Golf Channel's Viewer's Forum Oct. 17 to discuss how technology is affecting golf courses. Weed, who was also just elected to the Board of Governors of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, recently wrote a statement for the ASGCA endorsing a modification of the golf ball to limit its distance.
