Silly Season Arrives Early

The UK October edition of Golf World arrived in the mailbox Thursday, boasting of a John Daly exclusive that will help me "rip it 20 yards further." But the tease in the bottom right read "Torrance on the Ryder Cup: What happens if it gets nasty? Sam reveals his crisis plan."

Now granted, this issue went to press well before the Ryder Cup was canceled, but in light of what occurred on Sept. 11, the whole idea of the Ryder Cup as this simmering battle that could turn ugly at a moment's notice is almost comical.

It's just golf, it's just a game.

Even more comical may be the Senior PGA Tour's little hocus pocus act it will attempt to pull on the golfing public.

The Wendy's Three-Tour Challenge is being taped by ABC the first week of November, and will be aired Dec. 22-23. The Senior Tour team will feature Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Fuzzy Zoeller.

Officially, though, Zoeller does not turn 50 until Nov. 11, a week after the taping of the event.

Talk about your silly season.
