A Look Back: Oct. 2

1966: Don Massengale wins the Canadian Open by three shots over Chi Chi Rodriguez.

1977: Miller Barber wins the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic by two strokes over George Archer.

1983: Jim Colbert wins the Texas Open by five strokes over Mark Pfeil.

1988: David Frost defeats Bob Tway in a playoff to win the Southern Open Invitational for his first PGA Tour victory.

1994: After missing part of season because of sinus surgery, Steve Elkington comes back to win the Buick Southern Open by five strokes over Steve Rintoul.

Bobby Grace Putters announces the introduction of the M.O.I. Design of Putters. The Moment of Inertia (M.O.I.) produces an expanded sweet spot along with reducing the twisting effect from off-center hits on the heel and toe of the putter.

Justin Leonard won the Texas Open Sunday wearing Black Widow cleats by Softspikes, bringing to 16 the number of PGA Tour events won this year by players wearing the cleats. Including Leonard, 77 of the 156 players in the field at LaCantera Golf Club used Softspikes brand cleats, according to Darrell Survey.

Leonard and J.J. Henry each used Ben Hogan irons to finish first and second, respectively, at the Texas Open at LaCantera Golf Club. For Leonard, the win was his sixth on the PGA Tour since joining in 1994.

Team Maxfli player Se Ri Pak brought her number of LPGA victories to 13 Sunday as she captured the AFLAC Champions. The win gives Maxfli A10 its 13th professional tour win since the ball was introduced in late July, and gives Pak her fifth win of the season.

Auburn University's 18-hole golf course, built in 1999, is on the auction block after its owners defaulted on bonds. The sale, set for Oct. 18, is to include a clubhouse on 239.7 acres, maintenance and storage buildings and a driving range and practice facility.
