A Look Back: Sept. 28

1963: Jack Nicklaus wins the World Series of Golf title at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

1975: Dave Hill defeats Rik Massengale in a playoff to win the Sahara Invitational.

1980: Ben Crenshaw wins the Anheuser-Busch Classic by four strokes over Jack Renner.

1983: Fuzzy Zoeller finishes at 15-under-par 340 for 90 holes to win the Las Vegas Invitational by four strokes over Rex Caldwell.

1997: Europe opens a five-point lead on the United States after two days at the Ryder Cup at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain. Europe then clings on for a 14 1/2 -- 13 1Ž2 win for its second straight win.

Equipment
The same golf ball that David Duval won the British Open with is now available to consumers as the Nike Tour Accuracy DD golf ball. With a lower spin rate and higher launch angle, the DD ball is longer than the original Tour Accuracy and Tour Accuracy TW (Tiger Woods) and will be available for $54/dozen in February.

Nike Golf also launches the Nike Precision Double C series golf balls. The two models, the Double C Tour and the Double C Distance, are two-piece solid-core balls designed for low- to mid-handicap players and will hit store shelves in February.

Textron Golf, Turf & Specialty Products signs a contract with Meadowbrook Golf and its subsidiary International Golf Maintenance to provide golf cars, turf equipment and specialty vehicles for all the Meadowbrook facilities in the United States.

Troon Golf announces it will oversee Rose Creek Golf Club in Oklahoma, set to open in spring 2003. The 18-hole course has been designed by Arthur Hills and the surrounding community will include a shopping center and other recreational opportunities.

TheGolfChannel.com renews a streaming media distribution and hosting agreement with iBEAM, a company which encodes and streams audio and video content for the Web. iBeam will prepare online coverage of popular The Golf Channel shows "Golf Central," "Academy Live" and "Golf Talk Live" as well as coverage of tournaments and live events.

Golf Industry Giving

It's been heartening to see all the efforts of the golf community to help victims of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11.

The Wire has published information about what various companies and organizations have been doing to help. Following is a consolidated list. If your company is doing something for the relief effort that is not listed below, send us email at info@gpagolf.com and we will mention those next week.

  • The PGA Tour pledged $2 million. In addition, more than $400,000 has been committed by Tour players and $325,000 has been raised by organizers of PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour events. To make a donation through the PGA Tour, send checks to: PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 1043, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32004-1043.
  • The PGA Tour is selling United We Stand hats at their online golf store to benefit the NYPD and FDNY Victims' Family Funds. Visit www.pgatourstop.com and buy a hat for $12.50.
  • The National Golf Course Owners Association has organized a fundraising initiative for their member clubs called On Course America. Proceeds from rounds of golf played the weekend of Oct. 19-21 will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Visit oncourseamerica.com for information.
  • Golf equipment and collectibles are being sold through Ebay.com's Auction for America. Organizers hope to raise $100 million for rescue efforts. LPGA pro Maggie Will has collected signed golf balls from LPGA pros and rounds at Pinehurst No. 2, while Tiger Woods donated a flag from the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
  • Three New York courses will co-host a golf tournament Oct. 1 at Brierwood Country Club benefiting the Red Cross.
  • Orange County National Golf Center will hold a tournament Sept. 30 to raise money for the Red Cross. Earnings will be matched by the Orlando Sentinel Relief Fund.
  • Conoco will donate proceeds from its first annual Drive, Pitch & Putt junior golf contest and skills clinic Oct. 14 to the United Way's September 11th Fund.

    Other donations:

  • Tiger Woods made a personal donation to the American Express relief fund.
  • The PGA Tour Wives Association donated $10,000 to the Red Cross.
  • The Pebble Beach Company donated $100,000. Employees agreed to donate $50,000 that would otherwise be spent on an employee picnic and Christmas party.
  • Dunlop Slazenger Group Americas donated proceeds from 2001 Ryder Cup merchandise to the Red Cross.
  • Memphis National Golf Club hosted a tournament to benefit the Red Cross.
  • Natural Golf started two sales programs to sell instruction videos and clubs with proceeds going to disaster relief efforts.
  • The Staples Office Putting Championship in Seattle donated proceeds from its Sept. 20 event to support NW Response: Red Cross Relief Fund.
  • The John O'Hurley Celebrity Golf Invitational Sept. 24 in Texas donated a portion of proceeds to the Spirit Of America Relief Fund.
  • Textron donated $100,000 to the Red Cross. They also offered the use of eight Cessna jets/crews and $1 million worth of equipment and vehicles to aid recovery efforts.
  • TravelGolf.com promoted the Red Cross' Blood Donation web site and launched a Red Cross campaign.
  • Bullet/Cougar Golf is donating money from the sale of its Ultimate Velocity golf balls to the United Way's September 11 fund.
  • Bite Golf sent 500 pairs of hiking boots to Americare for N.Y. rescue workers.
  • The USGA, Louisville Golf, Taylor Made and Callaway posted links to donate on their Web sites.
