A Look Back: Sept. 25

1949: Louise Suggs wins her first major championship as a professional, winning the U.S. Women's Open by 14 strokes over Babe Zaharias.

1960: Billy Casper wins the Portland Open, which he would win again in 1961.

1977: Mike Hill wins the Ohio Kings Island Open by one stroke over Tom Kite.

1988: Bill Glasson wins the B.C. Open by two strokes over Wayne Levi and Bruce Lietzke.

1994: Mark McCumber wins the Hardee's Golf Classic by one stroke over Kenny Perry.

Equipment
New HX golf balls introduced by Callaway Golf will become the premium ball sold by the company, featuring a hexagon and pentagon pattern for better carry and retailing for $58/dozen. Callaway's Rule 35 balls have been reintroduced as the CTU 30 with a thinner, cast thermoset urethane cover and will be sold in three-ball sleeves instead of five-ball sleeves. Both balls are available in Blue for Soft Feel and Red for Firm Feel.

Thirty-seven official money events and five unofficial events make up the Senior PGA Tour schedule for 2002. The season opens with the MasterCard Championship Jan. 18-20 in Hawaii and 30 tournaments will be aired on PAX-TV and CNBC.

Nine GolfTEC learning centers plan to host a National Teach-A-Thon Sept. 29 with all proceeds going to aid victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Students will pay $35 for a half-hour golf lesson with one of GolfTEC's PGA of America teaching pros.

Korea's Hee-Won Han wins the 2001 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year trophy on the LPGA Tour. Han is the third Korean to be awarded the honor in four years and the first non-exempt player to win since 1997.
