A Look Back: Sept. 11

1955: Cary Middlecoff shoots a final-round 65 to win the Cavalcade of Golf by two shots over Sam Snead at Shackamaxon Country Club in Westfield, N.J.

1977: Gil Morgan breezes to the B.C. Open title, winning by five strokes over Lee Elder.

1988: Ken Green finishes off a six-stroke win at the Greater Milwaukee Open with a final-round 68.

1994: Nick Price wins the Bell Canadian Open by a shot over Mark Calcavecchia.

1994: David Gilford, who would go on to play in the 1995 Ryder Cup, wins the Smurfit European Open by five strokes over Italy's Costantino Rocca and Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal.

The State Farm LPGA Series, a 12-event television series shown on ESPN and ESPN2 with a $250,000 bonus pool, registers a 28-percent increase in average household viewership in 2001 as compared to 2000.

Courses
Construction begins in November on Orange Hill Plantation golf course in South Carolina. Course architect Steve Smyers says the course will encourage walking, take advantage of winds blowing in off the coast and feature fast-draining soils that promote playing a bump-and-run, ground game. The facility will also include three large practice areas.

Final touches are underway on a Forrest Richardson/Jack Snyder-designed course in Monticello, Utah. The course, set to open in May 2002, is part of a recreation area built on land reclaimed from uranium mining.

Architecture
Lower Makefield Township's governing body selects architect Rick Jacobson to design an upscale 18-hole course in the community just north of Philadelphia. Construction will begin in spring 2002 and the course should open in fall 2003.

Russell Blackburn, a U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer stationed in Virginia, wins the Slazenger Ryder Cup Sweepstakes. Blackburn receives a trip for two to the Ryder Cup, three rounds of golf in Scotland and accommodations.

Jim Thorpe uses Callaway Hawk Eye VFT irons and Rule 35 golf ball for his second straight win on the Senior PGA Tour. Thorpe also carried a Hawk Eye VFT Titanium driver and Big Bertha Steelhead Plus 4-wood. In addition, Argentinian Ricardo Gonzalez wins on the European Tour using an ERC II driver.
