1948: Willie Turnesa wins his second U.S. Amateur Championship, this at the Memphis (Tenn.) Country Club.

1972: Lee Trevino wins the Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open in a playoff over Lee Elder.

1978: Tom Kite wins the B.C. Open by five strokes over Mark Hayes.

1988: Eccentric Ken Green shoots a final-round 72 to win the Canadian Open by a stroke over Bill Glasson and Scott Verplank.

1994: Mike Springer shoots a 16-under-par 268 and wins the Greater Milwaukee Open by a stroke over Loren Roberts.

Jim Thorpe uses a Never Compromise putter that he purchased from a used club bin two weeks ago to win the Kroger Senior Classic in a playoff Sunday. Two of the top 10 players at the event used Never Compromise putters to claim more than $276,000 in earnings.

St. Andrews Links Trust installs a sulphur burner to improve the quality of the water used to irrigate its courses, including the Old Course. By adding small amounts of sulphur to the water and lowering the pH to that of rainwater, the burner will reduce grass diseases and improve the water absorption and release of nutrients.

The Majors Cup, a trophy awarded by Chicago-based Intersport to the golfer with the lowest stroke total after 16 rounds in the four majors, will be commemorated in The Majors Cup Guide and Yearbook for the first time this year. The publication will include highlights and a recap of all four majors. David Duval edged Phil Mickelson by one stroke to win The Majors Cup in 2001.
