A Look Back: Aug. 21

1914: Walter Hagen becomes the first wire-to-wire winner of the U.S. Open, winning at the Midlothian Country Club near Chicago.

1920: Jock Hutchison pulls off long odds at the PGA Championship, defeating J. Douglas Edgar 1-up in the final after making the field as an alternate.

1977: Andy North wins the American Express Westchester Classic by two strokes over George Archer.

1983: Curtis Strange wins the Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open by one stroke over former Wake Forest teammate Jay Haas and Jack Renner.

1994: Steve Lowery wins the Sprint International in a playoff over Rick Fehr. The players tied after regulation play in the modified Stableford scoring system with 35 points each.

Callaway Golf Company announces that its Board of Directors authorized plans to repurchase the company's common stock up to a maximum cost to the company of $100 million. Callaway also announces a second quarter dividend $.07 per share.

Callaway Golf Company announces that Ronald A. Drapeau, its President and CEO, has been elected to serve as Chairman of the Board. Drapeau fills the vacancy created by the death on July 5 of Ely Callaway, the company's founder.

Cowboy hat-wearing Shingo Katayama, who placed fourth at the PGA Championship, plays with a SRIXON golf ball called the Newbreed. The ball is the Japanese equivalent of SRIXON's Hi-Brid ball that is sold in the U.S. Katayama also used a SRIXON XX10 driver and irons.

Callaway Golf staff professional Annika Sorenstam won the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open Sunday using the Rule 35 Softfeel ball, while Steve Veriato won the Senior PGA Tour's Novell Utah Showdown on the Senior PGA Tour using the Rule 35 Firmfeel. The Rule 35 balls have been used to win 29 tournaments across the world's five major professional tours combined this year -- placing Callaway Golf second in wins among golf ball manufacturers.
