1912: Ben Hogan, winner of nine major championships, is born in Dublin, Texas.

1920: Englishman Ted Ray wins the U.S. Open at Inverness Club, beating Jack Burke Sr., Leo Diegel, Jock Hutchinson and Harry Vardon by a shot.

1955: LPGA Hall of Fame member Betsy King is born in Reading, Pa.

1989: Payne Stewart wins the PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes Golf Club for his first major championship.

1995: Steve Elkington beats Colin Montgomerie in a one-hole playoff to win the PGA Championship at Riviera Country Club.
