Reader's Forum
Recently, Tiger Woods was asked to comment on whether women should be invited to join traditionally men-only golf clubs like Augusta National and Muirfield. "It's one of those things where everyone has ... they're entitled to set up their own rules the way they want them," Woods said.

As the world's No. 1 golfer and an established sports celebrity, what is Tiger's role or responsibility in speaking up on social issues, like opening golf's exclusive venues to women members?

In Their Own Words
J.P. Hayes

J.P. Hayes, 36, won his second career title Sunday at the John Deere Classic (67-61-67-67). He also won the 1998 Buick Classic. Following are some of his comments throughout the week.

After shooting a course-record 61 in the second round:

I felt like I was going to play well, but you never expect something like that, but the putts started going in and I hit the ball probably as good as I hit it yesterday. So that made the difference, putting.

After I birdied 15 and -- after I birdied 15 I thought about it and I thought if I could finish birdie-eagle-birdie obviously that would be 59 so I was thinking about it on the 16th tee. I hit a great shot there, made birdie. I thought: Here we go. Then a perfect drive what I thought in the air was a perfect 3-iron, but it didn't work out. But it was fun for a while.

It was very low stress last two days. Yesterday I didn't make a bogey. Today I did make a bogey. But for the other 17 holes I really had very little stress. I hit a ton of greens and never really had -- never a -- besides 8 never really had a putt for par that I didn't think I was going to make.

After retaining a share of the lead with a bogey-free round Saturday:

It played much more difficult today. The wind was blowing quite a bit harder than it has all week. The course was much softer, so it played a lot longer than it has all week. It was difficult. I hung tough with some good pars, and the first 13 holes, the putts that I made were all for -- I think I made two or three good putts for par.

Every shot is important and I definitely wanted to be in the last group. I thought that was probably my biggest goal today was to stay tight with the lead and be in the last group. I feel like I have a pretty good chance tomorrow.

I feel very comfortable in this position. I dearly want to win another golf tournament and I am going to give it my best tomorrow and beyond that there's nothing I can do tomorrow.

After winning his second career title:

I probably wanted this one more just because I didn't win the first one. I didn't know what I was getting into and it just kind of happened. But I definitely wanted this one more, so in that respect it's pretty sweet.

I told my caddie walking to the 1st tee in the pro-am, I said I just had a vision, and he said what was that? I said I just had a vision that I had -- had to make a putt to win this tournament. It's pretty weird now that I think of it. Not to win the tournament. I said I just had a vision that I had a putt to win and he says, you mean the pro-am? And I said (laughter) -- I said no, the tournament.

I kind of surprised myself a little bit in that I really didn't miss a golf shot today. You expect in the situation to maybe hit a couple of lose shots, but I just, boy I just -- every shot I hit was pleasing to the eye. Aside from the tee shot on 1.

I always believed that I was going to win again and I did, but, you know, I don't think it really changes my -- where I am. It will improve my world ranking. It's going to get me in some more tournaments, but I am still going to be a guy that's going to go out and give it is 110% at every tournament. That's not going to change.

Reflecting on his win:

It's been a fun couple of days. It's been tiring, although I wouldn't trade it for anything. But the last time I won -- I was thinking about why it was so much different this time, and I figured out that it's because I have a cell phone now, and I didn't have a cell phone back then. It's amazing how many people can get ahold of you when you have a cell phone.

It didn't really occur to me what I could shoot (on Friday) until I got to the back nine, and then I started thinking about it. I think for me, anyway, it's unavoidable and I did think about shooting 59 with three holes left. I hit some pretty good shots in those three holes, so thinking about it didn't really affect me.

No, it just happens. 61 is just -- well, I've only had a couple, but it just happens. Before you know it, you're signing a card for 61.
