FAR HILLS, N.J. (July 31, 2003) - Berkeley Hall Club in Hilton Head, S.C., has been selected as the site of the 2005 USGA State Team Championships, the United States Golf Association has announced. Both the men's and women's competitions will be conducted from September 27-29.

Berkeley Hall's North and South courses, designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2001, will serve as the site of their first USGA championships.

Berkeley Hall's North Course features dramatic elevation changes and an open coastal landscape framed by seaside grasses as well as unique water features and strategic bunkering. The South Course is a parkland-style layout with slightly smaller greens and fairways winding through a mature pine forest.

"Berkley Hall is proud to host the USGA State Team Championships," said Duke Delcher, vice president of golf marketing and development. "As a new club, we could not be more excited to have this opportunity."

The team championships were first introduced in 1995 and they have been held on an every- other-year basis since then. Each state is invited to submit a team entry of three players, with the top two scores counting toward the team total for each of the three days. In 2001, 52 men's teams (including teams from Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) competed for the trophy named in honor of former USGA President James Hand. Forty-five women's teams competed for the trophy named for past USGA President Judy Bell.

In 2003, the men's championship will from Sept. 16-18 at Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, Mass. The women's championship will be held from Sept. 16-18 at Wellesley Country Club in Wellesley, Mass.
