Friends Of Hawaii Charities And Turtle Bay Championship Tournament Distribute Funds To Oahu Charities

KAHUKU, Oahu, Hawaii (August 15, 2003) - The Friends of Hawaii Charities and the 2002 Turtle Bay Championship golf tournament distributed to North Shore recipients $80,000 in charity funds, Friday, August 15. Grant monies raised as a result of the exciting and highly successful PGA Champions Tour event held last fall at the Arnold Palmer course of the Turtle Bay Resort were distributed to twenty-one community services agencies.

Friends of Hawaii Charities was formed in 1998 to provide funding for health education-oriented projects directed toward women, children and youth. The Friends' goals complement the PGA Champions Tour charity objectives. The PGA TOUR/Champions Tour/Nationwide Tour and their tournaments generated over $72.4 million for charity last year and since the first recorded donation in 1938 a cumulative total now exceeds $740 million.

Anthony R. Guerrero, Jr., president of Friends of Hawaii Charities, stated "We are pleased to support these community services agencies with project funding and contributing to the specific needs of dedicated non-profit service organizations in our state."

Receiving the grants were Aloha Ke Akua High School, Hau'ula Elementary, Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs, Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, Inc., Kahuku High School Band, Kahuku Hospital, Ko'olauloa Educational Alliance Corporation, Na lei Nanio Waialua, Na Pua Aloha, Inc., New Hope Christian Fellowship; NSLA (North Shore Lifeguard Association), PGA Aloha Section, Inc., The Private Sector, Saint Michael's School, Save the Sea Turtles International; Sunset Beach Church of Christ and Christian School, Sunset Beach Elementary School, Victory Ohana Prison Fellowship, Waialua High and Intermediate School, Waialua Elementary School, and YMCA Camp, H.R.Erdman.

The 2003 PGA Champions Tour Turtle Bay Championship tournament will be held October 6-12 with a $1.5 million purse and a $225,000 champion's first prize. The par-72, 7,088 yard Palmer Course named for the legendary golfer and course designer, Arnold Palmer, will host a stellar field of 81 Champions Tour pros at the third annual event on the picturesque North Shore. Heading the list will be defending champion, Hale Irwin, and Craig Stadler who already this year has won the B.C. Open on the regular PGA TOUR and the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Tournament on just his fourth Champions Tour event since his 50th birthday in June.
