GOLF FOR WOMEN Magazine Celebrates 10th Anniversary As LPGA T&CP Championship Title Sponsor

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 15, 2002) - The 2002 GOLF FOR WOMEN Magazine LPGA Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP) Championship, July 30-Aug. 1, returns to the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., for the third-straight year. This year's $100,000 event will mark the 15th staging of the event and GOLF FOR WOMEN Magazine's 10th year as title sponsor.

The Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, owned and operated by LPGA pioneer Peggy Kirk Bell and her family, features a 1921 Donald Ross-designed, par-72 golf course and an adjacent Georgian-style Inn that will serve as the official tournament hotel. Julie Hennessy of St. Charles, Minn., will defend her title in the Championship Division, while Vicki Phillips of Oakton, Va., is defending her Senior Division title.

"This is Golf for Women's 10th year as the title sponsor of this wonderful event and we couldn't be more pleased," said Barrie Oringer, executive director, creative services for Golf for Women magazine. "This tournament showcases some of the world's best women teaching and club professionals competing at the highest level, and we are happy to continue our involvement with the event and the LPGA. Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club has been an ideal stage for this tournament for the past two years, and we look forward to another top-notch event this year."

The 54-hole event will be contested July 30-Aug. 1 and is open to all active Master, Class A and B, Apprentice, Life and Senior members in good standing of the LPGA T&CP Division. The field will be limited to the first 147 entries. A portion of these spots will be held for Senior Division competitors, age 50 and over. The event is the premier competition for women teaching and club professionals, and the winner earns a spot in the 2003 McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by AIG, one of the LPGA Tour's four major championships, and in the 2003 GOLF FOR WOMEN Magazine LPGA T&CP Championship. The Titleist, Cobra and FootJoy Pro-Am will precede the tournament on Monday, July 29.

Last year, Hennessy carded rounds of 72-75-72=219 (+3) to win by one shot over Mary Enright (70-76-74=220) of Armonk, N.Y., and Stephanie Martin (77-73-70=220) of Lexington, Ky. Phillips shot rounds of 72-80-74=226 (+10) and came away with the Senior Division title by topping Linda Groover of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., by one stroke.

In conjunction with the event, the LPGA T&CP Division will induct the 2001 class of the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 27, at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., the site of the 2001 U.S. Women's Open that is also owned by Bell. Goldie Bateson, the late Ellen Griffin, the late Dr. DeDe Owens and the late Joanne Winter will be officially inducted into the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame, joining Patty Berg, Betty Hicks, Marilynn Smith, Shirley Spork, Louise Suggs and Bell. In addition, a pro-am will be played at Pine Needles prior to the induction.
