Kraft-Nabisco Becomes Pro-Am Sponsor for Safeway Classic Contact Reid Hutchins PORTLAND, Ore. (August 21, 2003) - Tournament Golf Foundation, Inc. of Portland, OR, today announced that Kraft-Nabisco will be the Pro-Am title sponsor for the 2003 edition of the Safeway Classic. The Pro-Am competition for this year's event will be held Sept. 24th and 25th. The field for the Pro-Am should be excellent. Based on current review of the player list, all 40 of the top money winners on tour have agreed to be in Portland this year. The tournament is the second oldest event on the LPGA Tour. The 2003 Safeway Classic marks the 32nd consecutive year the LPGA tour event has been brought to Portland by TGFI. The event, originally called the Portland Classic, has now donated over $7 million to local children's charities since its inception in 1972. "We are pleased to have Kraft-Nabisco involved in our event as the Pro-Am sponsor," said Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation Inc. "Kraft-Nabisco has a long tradition with LPGA golf, and we are proud to have them associated with our event this year." The 2003 edition of the The Safeway Classic will be held at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club, Sept. 22-28. The event was moved back two weeks, this year only, to accommodate the Solheim Cup, which is being held in Sweden the week of Sept. 8th. The purse for the event for this year has been increased and will now stand at $1,200,000. Tournament Golf Foundation Inc. is comprised of a local group of volunteers who donate their time and provide the primary operations for the annual event. Begun in 1972 by TGFI founder Elon Ellis, the group is now comprised of over 45 local individuals and couples. TGFI announced recently that they are now the owners and operators of another LPGA event, The Safeway International, to be held March 15-21in the Phoenix, AZ area.
