Kraft Nabisco Championship Announces New "Kids Day" Contact Donna Hahn RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (March 21, 2003) - The 2003 Kraft Nabisco Championship will become child's play when the LPGA golf tournament sponsors its first "Kids Day" on Saturday, March 29, during Tournament Week. Set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mission Hills Country Club driving range in Rancho Mirage, Calif., the day will celebrate golf's youngest fans and feature a free Oscar Mayer hotdog lunch, entertainment by Harpo the Clown, magic shows by "Magic" Mike Belardo, Wienermobile putting contest, Oreo stacking competition, a special "tour of the course" for juniors, front-row seating at the 18th green (on a first-come basis), as well as information on golf etiquette and rules of the game. Kraft Nabisco Championship also announced that fans 17 and younger will receive free admission throughout the entire week when accompanied by an adult. Tournament Week gets underway this Monday and concludes on Sunday, March 30. The tournament's popular Junior Golf Clinic also returns next week to Mission Hills on Tuesday, March 25. Free to children 17 and younger, the clinic will be held at 4 p.m. at the driving range. According to Tamra Borson, marketing and advertising coordinator for Kraft Nabisco Championship, "Kids Day" was developed in response to golf's growing popularity with teenagers and children. "Over the past few years, our tournament has enjoyed an infusion of young talent, both on and off the course," Borson said. "This year's amateur players include 13-year-old Michelle Wie from Hawaii, as well as 16-year-old twins Aree and Naree Song from Thailand, who have been a tremendous inspiration to young players everywhere. "The trend is that more parents are sharing their passion for golf with their kids. We look forward to presenting a fantastic opportunity for families to watch some of the most exciting players in all of golf while having a great time together." The 2003 Kraft Nabisco Championship is the first LPGA "major" golf tournament of the year and will be held for the 32nd time at Mission Hills Country Club. More than 100 of the world's top female golfers, including Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak, will compete for the $1.6 million purse, which was increased $100,000 over last year's purse. Tournament Week gets underway on March 24 with free admission to the practice round for LPGA players. At 4 p.m. that day, fans can also watch the Celebrity Hole-in-One Contest for Charity and the finals for the Toyota/Kraft Nabisco Championship $1 Million Hole-in-One Contest. The two-day Celebrity Pro-Am is set for Tuesday, March 25, and Wednesday, March 26. Celebrities from sports, stage and screen will team up with amateur players and LPGA pros to tackle the challenging Dinah Shore Tournament Course and Arnold Palmer Course at Mission Hills. Adults 55 and over can enjoy free admission to the Pro-Am as part of "Senior Appreciation Days." Championship play tees off Thursday, March 27, and continues through Sunday, March 30. Tickets to the Kraft Nabisco Championship are available at the gate or can be purchased at Pete Carlson's Golf and Tennis in Palm Desert and at Lumpy's in Cathedral City and La Quinta.
