Travel: Airline Woes in the News
By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck
wheretogonext.com It's almost impossible to read the business news in any U.S. city and not see a story about the ailing airline industry. Low-cost airline competition and increasingly high fuel costs have wrecked havoc on the bigger airlines. Here are just a few of their woes making the news. Northwest Airlines Look for a long battle between Sabre (a huge ticket reservation system used by many travel agents) and Northwest that will probably end up in court. In response to Northwest's announcement that they will charge up to $10 on tickets not bought through their own website, Sabre announced that they will make it more difficult for travel agents to book on Northwest. Not to be outdone, Northwest has now filed a "breach of contract" lawsuit against Sabre. Don't look for the consumer to win out on this one. Delta In another example of the financially strapped airline industry, Delta is having trouble renegotiating its debt with some of its creditors as it struggles to avoid bankruptcy. The airline is trying to restructure some its $20 million debt. With only $2 billion in cash left as of June 30, the airline is in need of a big fix soon. U.S. Airways Talks between US Airways and their pilots resumed last week after the airlines presented a counterproposal for negotiating the pilots contract. The airline is hoping to avoid declaring its second bankruptcy since 2002 but says they need major concessions from the pilots by September 30th. US Airways is also negotiating with flight attendants, machinists and Communications Workers of America, which represents reservations agents and gate workers. On a brighter note: Low-cost carrier Jet Blue has received the okay from the U.S. Transportation Department to offer service into The Bahamas. The airline plans to launch daily service from New York's JFK Airport to Nassau starting November 1st. One-way fares will range from $99 to $249 when booked online.

At the recent Buick Championship, only one of the top-25 ranked players in the world were in the field. In the end, Woody Austin defeated Tim Herron in a playoff. With the majors, the World Golf Championships and the Cups -- Ryder and Presidents -- so bunched together, is the PGA Tour season too long? Does it have too many events? Would it be OK to have fewer events and stronger fields? The Wire wants to know your thoughts. Send comments to info@gpagolf.com with the subject line "Quantity."
