Destinations: The Ultimate Hotel Amenities
By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck
wheretogonext.com

Once a hot ego issue, purloined hotel bathrobes just aren't making their way into departing guests' suitcases anymore. Maybe because the robes are just too thick and fluffy to stash in a weekend bag, or more likely because hotels are now charging the cost of the robe to the guests. But shampoos and other bath amenities are another matter. These luxury items are part of the cost of doing business for a hotel. It expects people to walk off with them - it's even built into the cost of the rooms.

For years, we used to bring those miniature bottles home with us as well. We thought they'd be perfect to take on the road when we traveled abroad. But in actuality, they're really too small for anything but a weekend trip. So we stopped carting them off and starting using them at the hotel instead. With great pleasure we might add. What a treat to luxuriate in an oversized bathtub with lavender smelling bath salts - something we just wouldn't bother to do at home.

High-end luxury hotels, getting more and more competitive, have stepped up the stakes by offering high-end luxury brands of soaps, shampoos and other bath supplies to satisfy guests. And manufacturers are finding this a good source of income as well.

Take Hermés, the chi-chi French company best known for its ties and scarves. Hermés now makes amenities for a few select hotels, including the City Club in New York (from $225, 212-921-5500), Ballagio in Las Vegas (from $299, www.bellagiolasvegas.com), the Halekulani in Hawaii (from $325, www.halekulani.com/) and Emerson Inn & Spa in New York (from $489, www.the-emerson.com/).

New York's Carlyle Hotel (from $325, www.thecarlyle.com) and the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles (from $225, www.hotelbelair.com/) feature Kiehl products, which are also stocked on Air Force One.

Aveda, known for its natural hair products, is featured in San Francisco's boutique-style Palomar Hotel (from $325, http://www.hotelpalomar.com/).

So the next time you think about taking the soap home, go ahead. But remember, stick to taking things that only begin with the letter "s." That's soap, shampoo, shower gel, shoeshine kits, sewing kit, stationery and slippers. Yes, slippers. Just leave the robe, towels and the other "s" - shower curtain - alone.
