Destinations: Serenity by the Sea

Grand old seaside mansions are pretty common in the south (and the north, too, for that matter). Luxurious, often remote, always breathtaking, they became a traditional hallmark of position and prosperity.

Now there's a new grand mansion about to welcome its first visitors.
This one's beautifully situated on an island just 30 minutes from downtown Charleston, S.C. Like all great mansions of the past, it has a fitting name The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island.

Designed to reflect the style of those grand old southern seaside mansions of the 1800s, it's a $125-million, 255-room repository of resort luxury on 10 miles of ocean. Long anticipated, it should easily rank among America's elite destinations after its Aug. 20 grand opening.

The Sanctuary features some of the largest and most luxurious guestrooms in America, including a spectacular 3,100-square-foot Presidential Suite (larger than the some of the homes of its soon-to-be-guests). Ninety percent of the rooms have ocean views.

In addition to its luxury guestrooms, The Sanctuary has two oceanfront restaurants. The Ocean Room features New American cuisine; Jasmine Porch serves regional favorites. There's also a casual seaside grill, two bars, seven boutique shops, more than 18,000 square feet of meeting space, a luxurious nature-based spa, and wireless Internet access all the way to the beach.

The Sanctuary has a sprawling residential atmosphere and a sense of timelessness. The entrance driveway is lined with over 150 Live Oak trees more than 50 feet tall. Outside, the brick, slate and ironwork reflect the same design and care as did Low Country manor houses 200 years ago.

Inside, the lobby flooring features hand-distressed walnut planks on top of an intricate sleeper system that creaks slightly under foot, recreating the sounds of past great houses. Grand staircases are flanked by 30-foot-high murals depicting Kiawah nature scenes. The collection of art and antiques is so extensive that guests are given brochures highlighting various artifacts.

The Sanctuary experience also includes access to world-class Kiawah amenities, including The Ocean Course (one of five championship golf courses), two tennis clubs and an extensive recreational and nature program.

At The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, the past comes to the present.

Get your stars ready, Mobile and AAA.
