In Their Words
Editor's note: The opening round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament began on Wednesday in La Quinta, Calif. Following are quotes and notes provided by the PGA Tour from several of the first-round leaders.

Scott Gump (6-under 66, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course): You just want to get in a good rhythm. Playing 108 holes, you know everybody is going to make some bogeys. Each shot is the same weight. Every single shot counts the same. I do the same old routine (every year). Just put one foot in front of the other. ... Knowing that it is six rounds, you have to keep the highs and the lows on an even keel. We've still got 90 holes to play. ... I finished fourth here in 1990. But you still have to hit the shot, no matter how much experience you have.

Bob Burns (5-under 67, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course): I think mentally if you get off to a good start over here on the Nicklaus like you should, you would be able to play the TPC maybe a little better, softer or how you want to. On the flip side, if you don't have such a good day starting on the TPC, maybe you feel like you are behind the eight ball and start pressing over here on the Nicklaus. It's six days and everyone just keeps their helmet on, it goes 108 holes.

D.J. Trahan (5-under 67, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course): To be honest, most guys will tell you that the first day is the easiest. All of the pressure comes the last couple of days. ... Everybody has their own way of looking at it. It is six days. To have six rounds makes it that much more difficult. ... A double bogey today won't hurt as bad as a double on Sunday or Monday. Your objective needs to be to win the tournament, not just to get your card.

Phillip Price (5-under 67, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course): I hit it perfect out there to start. I have been practicing quite well but you still have to get the job done. The weather was very good for us today, not really sure what scoring was like but it was a nice really solid round of golf for me. ... I want to play on the U.S. TOUR full-time. This is the premier Tour in the world.

Keoke Cotner (5-under 67, TPC Stadium Course): I played pretty solid. When I mishit a shot, I recovered well. I took advantage of my yardages. ... Basically you're just grinding away out there. But you have to just go out there and play golf and not worry about anything else. I'm trying to make it as simple as possible. ... The end of the 2004 season was a disappointment. It was a struggle for me down the stretch, but it was a good learning experience at the same time. I'm hoping to turn that into a positive for me this week.

Aaron Barber (4-under 68, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course): It's a good week to have some good vibes. A couple of years ago I played well pretty much the whole week so I feel really good on both golf courses. Kind of nice to start over on this course. It's not quite as penalizing as the Stadium Course. I got off to a good start. I didn't make any bogeys and I'll take that all week right now.

Notes: Eighty-three players posted sub-par scores during the first round of Q-School with 54 of those scores coming on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course. ... The scoring averages for the two courses on Wednesday TPC Stadium (72.798) and Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course (71.071). Two years ago the round one totals were 73.244 and 71.155, respectively. ... The toughest holes on the two courses the par-4 18th on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course with a scoring average of 4.424 and the par-4 18th on the TPC Stadium with a scoring average of 4.452.
