EQUIPMENT: Q&A with Jim Stewart of Lovett Golf
In early 1997, Jim Stewart teamed up with dentist Bill Lovett to develop and market a new golf club. Six years later, the Lovett Sand Wedge has been used on the Champions and LPGA Tours, and has been extensively marketed with a popular infomercial.
Q.: The Lovett Sand Wedge claims to replace "technique with technology". How does it do that? JIM STEWART: The "Lovett Sand Wedge" replaces "technique with technology," allowing players of all skill levels to play shots from the sand and the rough with a normal golf swing. Mid and high-handicappers who tend to find sand a struggle at best will find the Lovett particularly helpful in overcoming the fear and uncertainty these shots tend to provoke. Being able to execute a sand shot with the same setup as an iron shot from the fairway, a normal swing without the open stance, open face. Q.: How does the design of the club change how the player should hit the ball? JIM STEWART: Simply address the ball in the middle of your stance, square to the target, use a normal swing hitting down and through and finish to the target. Out of the rough and out of the sand the shot is the same, nothing new to learn. No longer concerned with the precise number of inches to contact the sand behind the ball, simply hit down behind the ball and finish turning through the shot. Q.: What is the technology behind the design? JIM STEWART: The design of the wedge with its rounded sole and face forward progression reduces the drag allowing the shot be half the effort of the same shot with a traditional wedge. In the rough the leading edge moves the grass away from the hosel allowing the ball to get up on the face and out of rough virtually eliminating the drag on the club as it moves through the sand or grass. Q.: Where did the design idea come from? JIM STEWART: The Lovett Wedge is the brainchild of Dr. Bill Lovett, a practicing Florida dentist. He created the club initially for his son who has a disability. Having an easy to hit club made golf a much more enjoyable game for his son. Q.: The Lovett wedge claims to eliminate several different trouble shots. Can you elaborate on how the problems are eliminated using the Lovett Wedge? JIM STEWART: [Shanks] A shank is the result of striking the ball in the area where the hosel enters the heel of the club. On Lovett wedges the hosel intersection meets at the center of the face as opposed to traditional design where the hosel is in line with the leaded edge. This center intersection avoids the potential to shank. [Skull Shots] Skull shots are the result of the leading edge of the club striking the ball at its equator. This is caused by the club striking the hitting surface behind the ball and bouncing up into the ball by the leading edge. The Lovett wedge exclusive sole design allows the club to travel through the surface and drives the ball up. The face progression of the Lovett wedge places the leading edge substantially ahead of the hosel, which causes the ball to be struck at a lower point than with traditional wedges. [Chili Dips] This occurs when the club head strikes behind the ball and slides beneath it in fluffy grass or wet soil. Our unique sole plate design and club balance keeps the face square through contact, thereby preventing the face of the Lovett wedge from lying down and creating a fluffy shot. [Flyers] A flyer is created when the face of the club traps the grass between it and the ball at impact. The Lovett wedges' face forward progression is designed to place the center or gravity of the club to the rear of the leading edge. Along with its curved leading edge, the Lovett wedge minimizes the interference of long grasses and other impediments by creating a wave-like action through the grass or sand. [Smothered Shots] These shots are the result of the club head twisting closed during impact. This is caused by the grass wrapping around the hosel and closing the face. Lovett wedges offer a unique face progression, a center shafted hosel and a unique radius sole that brushed aside the grass regardless of its length allowing the club to travel down the line to the target. Q.: Where is the club available? JIM STEWART: Available in steel and graphite, right and left handed, Tour Standard is 59-degree loft. Tour Lob is 63-degree loft. MSRP is $99.98 in steel, $119.98 in graphite. 20-minute video included. Order online at www.lovettgolf.com or by calling (866) 323-8900.
