Lietzke-Watson A Close 1-2 in Charles Schwab Cup Race

(August 18, 2003) - Bruce Lietzke continues to hold a slim margin over Tom Watson in the Charles Schwab Cup race as the season hits the stretch run. Lietzke, the Champions Tour's only two-time winner this year, is 63 points ahead of Watson.

Jim Thorpe jumped to ninth place with his win at the Long Island Classic. John Jacobs still holds on to third place, with Gil Morgan and Vicente Fernandez rounding out the top five.

The third quarter ends after this week's Allianz Championship, where bonus points will be awarded for play over the last seven tournaments. Points will be awarded to players who are among the top-10 point earners this quarter. Morgan won the first quarter and the 240 bonus points, with John Jacobs taking the second-quarter top prize.

Charles Schwab Cup points are awarded weekly to the top-10 finishers and ties at 31 official Champions Tour events. Points are based on the money distribution for each tournament, with every $1,000 earned the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point.

This year, six tournaments offer triple points to all players finishing inside the top 10 that week. The Tour's five majors, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, Ford Senior Players Championship, Senior British Open, and next week's JELD-WEN Tradition, plus the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, offer such incentives.
