Morgan Moves Back into Top Five in Charles Schwab Cup Race and Levi Makes Move with 3M Championship Win (August 11, 2003) - By finishing tied for second at the 3M Championship, Gil Morgan, moved back into the top five of the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Wayne Levi, who was 31st a week ago, earned 263 points by winning the 3M Championship to climb to 24th position. Morgan, ranked seventh a week ago, gained on all six players ahead of him as none of them earned points at the Twin Cities tournament. Morgan has been a consistent performer all year despite being the only player near the top of the standings without a victory this season. The win also puts Levi in position to benefit from the end-of-quarter bonus period, where additional points are awarded for play in the third quarter of the Champions Tour season. The third quarter ends after the Allianz Championship, which concludes Aug. 24. Quarterly bonus points will be awarded to players who are among the top-10 point earners that quarter. Morgan won the first quarter and the 240 bonus points, with John Jacobs taking the second-quarter top prize. Bruce Lietzke maintains a 63-point lead on Tom Watson in the overall standings. Jacobs and Morgan are a distant third and fourth, respectively, with Craig Stadler rounding out the top five. Charles Schwab Cup points are awarded weekly to the top-10 finishers and ties at 31 official Champions Tour events. This year, six tournaments offer triple points to all players finishing inside the top 10 that week. The Tour's five majors, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, Ford Senior Players Championship, Senior British Open, and the JELD-WEN Tradition, plus the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, offer such incentives.
