After 11 Top 10s, Doyle Captures FleetBoston Victory and Makes Move in Charles Schwab Cup Race

(August 4, 2003) - Finishing in the top 10 at tournaments this year didn't seem to be a problem for Allen Doyle. Winning, however, was another story. Doyle, the 2001 Charles Schwab Cup champion, racked up points in 11 of his previous 18 tournaments this season with top-10 finishes. Sunday, Doyle won the FleetBoston Classic, his first title since July, 2001, the year he won Charles Schwab Cup. By adding 225 points Sunday, Doyle moved from eighth to sixth in the year-long standings, only three points out of the top five.

Despite not earning any points last week, Bruce Lietzke, who tied for 14th in Boston, remains the overall points leader, followed by Tom Watson, John Jacobs, Craig Stadler and Vicente Fernandez.

Players are approaching another end-of-quarter bonus period, where more points are available. The third quarter ends after the Allianz Championship, which concludes Aug. 14. Quarterly bonus points will be awarded to players who are among the top-10 point earners that quarter. Gil Morgan won the first quarter and the 240 bonus points, while Jacobs won the second quarter.

Charles Schwab Cup points are awarded weekly to the top-10 finishers and ties at 31 official Champions Tour events. Points are based on the money distribution for each tournament, with every $1,000 earned the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point.

This year, six tournaments offer triple points to all players finishing inside the top 10 that week. The Tour's five majors, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, Ford Senior Players Championship, Senior British Open, and the JELD-WEN Tradition, plus the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, offer such incentives.

The standings after the FleetBoston Classic (20th of 31 official / Charles Schwab Cup events):
