Slight Change In Top Ten Contenders In Charles Schwab Cup Race; Hale Irwin Still Retains Lead

(May 28, 2002) - Hale Irwin sits comfortably atop the Charles Schwab Cup race with a 299-point lead over second place John Jacobs (877 points.) Dana Quigley (809), Tom Kite (755) and Doug Tewell (741) round out the top five. Farmers Charity Classic winner Jay Sigel moved to 24th place.

Charles Schwab Cup points are awarded at all 35 official SENIOR PGA TOUR events. The top-10 standings (position, player, events played, total points, points off lead) after the Farmers Charity Classic (15th of 35 events) are: 1) Hale Irwin (11) -- 1,176 points
2) John Jacobs (15) -- 877 (-299)
3) Dana Quigley (15) -- 809 (-367)
4) Tom Kite (9) -- 755 (-421)
5) Doug Tewell (11) -- 741 (-435)
6) Bruce Lietzke (9) -- 614 (-562)

The Charles Schwab Cup is the SENIOR TOUR's season-long bonus championship points program designed to recognize the SENIOR TOUR's leading player. It will award $2.1 million in annuities to the top-five finishers at the end of the official season on October 27th. The winner will earn a $1 million tax-deferred annuity. The program rewards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency. Points are awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties at all 35 official SENIOR TOUR tournaments. Points are based on the money distribution for each tournament with every $1,000 earned being the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point.
