Despite Not Winning, Consistent Morgan Takes Charles Schwab Cup Lead

(March 25, 2003) - Another top-10 finish by Gil Morgan was enough to jump him into the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Morgan leads Hale Irwin, the 2002 Schwab Cup champion, by 22 points. Despite their one-two standing, Morgan and Irwin are both winless in 2003. Morgan has finished in the top 10 in five of the six events he has played, while Irwin has enjoyed four top-10s in six tournaments. Rodger Davis, who won his first Champions Tour event at the Toshiba Senior Classic, moved from 27th place to fifth with his victory. Dana Quigley led the Charles Schwab Cup race for the entire season after winning the season-opening MasterCard Championship. He fell to third place after not earning any points last week.

First Quarter Bonus Points To Be Determined At Emerald Coast Classic

For the first time, quarterly bonus points will be awarded this year to players who are among the top-10 point earners each quarter, with performances at Champions Tour majors, as well as the season-ending Champions Tour Championship, worth three times those of all other official events. The first quarter concludes at the Champions Tour's next event, the Emerald Coast Classic (Apr. 20). The other three segments end at the Farmers Charity Classic (June 22), Allianz Championship (Aug. 24) and Champions Tour Championship (Oct. 26). Quarterly points will be added to the point totals of the top 10 finishers as follows (the equivalent of a $1.6 million purse, the average tournament purse in 2002):
