SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (August 20, 2003) - Hale Irwin, three-time U.S. Open Champion and five-time victorious Ryder Cup team player, has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the 3rd Annual Golf Classic at Troon Golf & Country Club. The Classic, scheduled for November 9 and 10, is sponsored by Stinson Morrison Hecker, LLP, and benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation(R) of Central & Southern Arizona.

Irwin feels strongly about the organization's mission to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

"The Make-A-Wish Foundation brings smiles into kids' lives, so I'm happy to lend my support to this year's Golf Classic," says Irwin. "It's an outstanding event on a top course and a great way to have fun while helping kids."

Irwin played golf at the University of Colorado and won individual honors in the 1967 NCAA Championship. He turned pro that year, and after nearly three decades of championship play, joined the Senior PGA Tour in 1995. In 1998, he was voted the circuit's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Irwin enjoyed a record-setting season in 2002, on the Champions Tour, and was again voted the Player of the Year, the third time he has earned the honor.

The 3rd Annual Golf Classic kicks off with a dinner and auctions on Sunday, November 9. Irwin will help host the evening, which includes cocktails, silent and live auctions, entertainment, fireworks display and a gourmet dinner. Open to the public, tickets are available for $85 per person (tournament play not necessary to attend).

On Monday, November 10, the Make-A-Wish Golf Classic hosts an elite group of 144 golfers who will enjoy a great day of golf at the Troon Golf & Country Club, consistently named one of the world's best courses by national golf magazines. The Classic features closest-to-pin and hole-in-one contests.

Registration and breakfast for golf begin at 6:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. An awards luncheon follows the tournament. Cost is $450 per person; $1,700 per foursome and includes breakfast, tournament play, an awards lunch and tee prizes. Each playing spot includes one dinner ticket. Corporate sponsorships are available. To register, and for more information, call (602) 395-WISH (9474).

The goal of this year's Golf Classic is to raise $200,000 to fund at least 40 wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. More than 165 kids are currently awaiting their wishes. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Southern Arizona has granted more than 1,900 wishes since becoming the founding chapter in 1980. More than 100,000 children have received wishes worldwide.
