GAITHERSBURG, Md. (February 14, 2002) -- Softspikes, Inc., the pioneer of and worldwide leader in plastic golf cleats, has named PGA Professional Bill Lytton as its new sales representative for eastern North Carolina and the Piedmont region.

Lytton, a member of the PGA of America since 1969, helped build Maccripine Country Club in Pinetops, N.C., in 1966 and later served as the club's head professional for seven years. He went on to a distinguished career in the golf industry, including an 11-year run as the head professional at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C. During that span, he served as president of the Carolinas PGA Section and was a member of the national PGA board of directors.

Lytton was the head professional at Hyland Hills Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., for eight years until his retirement in 1998.

An independent sales representative for four years in the 1970s, Lytton decided to join the Softspikes sales team after the proper due diligence.

"My investigation showed that Softspikes is a first-class, well-run company," says Lytton. "The combination of a strong inside-outside sales force convinced me to accept the opportunity."

Lytton works in conjunction with longtime industry sales veteran Trask Buxton, who handles sales of Softspikes brand cleats and accessories throughout the rest of North Carolina as well as all of South Carolina.

Softspikes' extensive sales team consists of five account managers and 44 outside sales representatives.

In its advertising and various marketing materials, Softspikes is encouraging golfers to maximize their performance by checking their cleats more often. Softspikes recommends that golfers consider changing their cleats after every 10 rounds.

Each week on the 2002 PGA Tour, more than 85 percent of those players wearing plastic cleats opt to wear Black Widow cleats by Softspikes, according to the independent Darrell Survey. The winner of the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the 2002 Buick Invitational wore Black Widow cleats.

Black Widow is the the top-selling cleat in the game and is original equipment on FootJoy performance golf shoes.
