Janet Kacskos PARK CITY, Utah (May 28, 2002) - Promontory -- The Ranch Club, Tuesday announced Michael Marion as its director of golf. Marion is one of only two PGA Master Professionals in Utah and the only professional in the state with this prestigious classification to hold the position of director of golf. At Promontory, Marion will be responsible for the golf operations of up to five golf courses at the 6,500-acre recreational second home and private club community located near Park City and Deer Valley, including the soon-to-open Pete Dye Canyon Golf Course. Marion, 43, joins Promontory with more than 20 years of golf experience. Most recently Marion was director of golf at Elk River Country Club, an exclusive second home community in North Carolina featuring a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Promontory's second golf course will also be a Nicklaus Signature course. Prior to Elk River, Marion was associate professional at the world-renowned Medinah Country Club near Chicago, which features three world-class courses and has played host to numerous major PGA championship tournaments. "What attracted me to Promontory is the phenomenal property and the variety of golf that will be offered," said Marion. "Every type of golfer will love this place, from the rambling sagebrush meadows and rolling hills to the canyons. We plan up to five championship 18-hole golf courses on the property, each by a different top-name designer -- so we'll have a new course opening every few years -- that's exciting!" The first nine holes of the Pete Dye Canyon Golf Course will open July 5, with the entire 18-hole course opening over Labor Day Weekend. Jack Nicklaus is designing Promontory's second course, which is scheduled to open in 2006. "The Pete Dye Canyon Golf Course is one where you find yourself staring at the holes and thinking, 'Wow -- I would love to play that,'" said Marion. "You'll be able to play this course every day and not get tired of it. It's amazing the attention to detail on the course -- from putting down the sod to the placement of each individual stone -- Promontory is taking it a step above." Growing up near Chicago, Marion was bitten by the golf bug when he was a caddy at Medinah. Always interested in education, Marion received his PGA master's designation in 1996 -- less than 1 percent of PGA members obtain this prestigious classification. "I love to teach," said Marion. "We will have up to six tee boxes on each hole of the Dye course (juniors, ladies, seniors, men's, pro and championship), and will give instruction for all levels of players." Marion, who has two sons; 5-year-old Sloan and 3-year-old Sean, says he teaches safety first. "I want them to learn respect for the game. I have them follow me and replace divots. Then they can hold the club and hit tennis balls. By around age five, they're strong enough to actually swing a club. Juniors are going to be a big part of our golf operation at Promontory."
