Ron Garland SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (January 18, 2002) -- Ivan Morris, Registered Golf Nut #2761, was named 2001 Golf Nut of the Year today by the Golf Nuts Society. A resident of Limerick City, Ireland, Morris became the first international member to win the competition. He won a hotly contested battle, finishing with a total of 55,120 points, 10,145 points ahead of runner-up Scott Houston (Nut #1186), of Pacific Grove, California. Morris had an Entrance Exam score of 13,489 points, and an even more impressive 41,631 Bonus Points. A 56-year-old 3-handicap, Morris came out of nowhere to become the first golfer to win the title in his first year as a member of "The Most Unique Golf Association in the World." Morris is the owner of commercial printing company in Limerick City. Some of his more impressive feats were: - In 1980, he asked his wife to have labor induced in the impending birth of their son so that he could play in the Interprovincial Championship at Royal County Down. She agreed, and he won. 1,000 points - Despite not having tickets, he and his wife and a lifelong friend flew to Augusta, Georgia for the 1981 Masters. They got in. 500 points - Over a ten-year period, he and a Canadian golf buddy exchanged over 900 audio tapes of golf discussions between them that totaled nearly 1,500 hours of conversation, discussing and arguing over nearly every golf subject imaginable. That's nuts! 1,900 points - Went to the driving range at his home club this past December 30, only to find that it was closed. He found an empty range basket and picked up about 100 muddy balls from the range; then found a barrel full of rainwater, broke through the ice and washed the balls with his bare hands, and hit the balls back out into the range. 300 points In winning the 2001 Golf Nut Of The Year title, Morris moved into fourth place on the All-Time Leading Scorers list with his 52,809 Nut Points. 1996 Golf Nut of the Year, Rob Gillette (Nut #2374), Founder of the Ben Crenshaw fan club, "Ben's Battalion", remained the all-time leading scorer with 73,195 career points, winning by a mere 15 points. The legendary Michael Jordan (#0023), 1989 Golf Nut of the Year, is in ninth place on the all-time list with 32,570 points.
