LA QUINTA, Calif. (March 13, 2003) - A new tournament has been announced for junior golfers in Palm Springs, California. Titled the Desert Junior Invitational (DJRI), the inaugural event will take place from July 20-23, 2003. The tournament will be open to boys and girls age 15 and under with a 54-hole format for ages 11-15 and a 27-hole format for ages 10 and under.

"Competition at any level makes golf more fun and it encourages young players to improve their skills and advance in the game," states president and founder Ed Middleton. "The DJRI will provide an avenue for juniors to showcase their progress in golf." DJRI is expected to attract junior golfers from around the world who will compete for educational scholarship awards.

Five premier desert golf courses will be utilized for the event including Westin Mission Hills, LandMark Golf Club, PGA West, Desert Willow and Mission Hills Country Club. Each junior will have the opportunity to play four rounds of golf; a practice round and three championship rounds. After the second round there will be a cut where fifty percent of the entrants will play for the championship and the other fifty percent will play in a consolation round.

Parental involvement is strongly encouraged by the DJRI. Juniors are encouraged to use caddies to help them play their best. Juniors can select a parent or guardian as their caddy so that both can share the experience and joy of competition together.

The DJRI Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goal is to promote education and the advancement of junior golf. Tournament information, including a schedule and entry form, can be found on the Desert Junior Invitational website at www.djri.org.
