Pelz Golf Institute to Return to DuPont World Amateur for More Research Contact Carl Mickelson AUSTIN, Texas (August 20, 2003) - For the past several years, the staff of the Pelz Golf Institute (the research arm of Dave Pelz Golf) has traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC, to take part in the annual DuPont Coolmax World Amateur Handicap Championship. They've done this not to compete in the world's largest single-site tournament, but to conduct research on the participants as they play and practice over the course of five competitive rounds. This year's event is scheduled for Aug. 25 - 29, with more than 4,000 golfers playing in the flighted handicap championship. The thought of that many golfers together in one place is just too tempting for the Institute staff to resist, so they'll be back at The DuPont to observe the players and measure their performance. Data taken will be used in the Institute's ongoing study of how golfers can play better and shoot lower scores. "The idea of 5,000 amateur golfers playing in tightly controlled handicap skill levels, gives us a unique opportunity to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of their games," says Dave Pelz. "In this environment, we can measure the performance of players in each handicap range, and armed with that information, can turn our findings into instruction that helps all golfers." At past DuPont Championships, the Institute has conducted tests to observe how golfers read greens and aim their putts, how accurately they execute their short game shots, which ones give them the most trouble, and how well they see and perceive their shot distances. Information analyzed from these tests has helped provide the basis for several learning aids and sessions in Pelz Scoring Game Schools and Clinics. In addition to the thousands of data points collected from participants on course, the Institute also hosts a booth at DuPont's nightly expo, held in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Pelz booth will offer attendees the chance to participate in additional testing in an indoor, controlled environment, as well as to meet Dave and have him sign a copy of his new book, Dave Pelz's 10 Minutes a Day to Better Putting. "Going to Myrtle Beach gives our staff a great chance to interact with all kinds of golfers," says Pelz. "Whether people take part in our research studies, fill out one of our research questionnaires, or just come by our booth to say 'Hi', we enjoy meeting them all and learning from them." The DuPont Coolmax World Amateur Handicap Championship is a four-day, 72-hole flighted tournament open to any amateur golfer with a verified USGA handicap or the foreign equivalent. The 20th annual event will be played on approximately 80 courses in the Myrtle Beach area. A fifth day play-off of all flight winners and ties will be played at the TPC of Myrtle Beach to determine the world champion. For more information on Pelz Golf, log on to www.pelzgolf.com.
