PORTLAND, Ore. (May 13, 2002) -- Learning golf has never been easier, more economical or more fun, thanks to a unique instructional format offered by the new Nike Golf Learning Centers that are now open at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, and Persimmon Country Club in Gresham. Chris Zimmerman, Nike Golf General Manager says, "We are thrilled to be able to bring the Nike Golf Learning Center concept to Portland. We have found over the last couple of years this is by far one of the most successful ways to attract new golfers. The recruit and retain objective is an extremely important initiative for Nike Golf, our partner American Golf as well as the entire golf industry. We are excited to have the ability to continue to grow the golf community in our City."
Currently located at more than 75 golf courses and clubs operated by American Golf, the Learning Centers offer a fresh new approach to conventional instruction by combining traditional golf fundamentals with instruction in such practical areas as golf jargon and terminology, proper etiquette, pace of play, how to operate a golf cart, how to reserve a tee time, and -- most importantly -- how to transition from the practice range environment to actually playing the course.
"The Nike Golf Learning Centers' user-friendly format and fun, inviting atmosphere eliminate many of the barriers that have prevented people from learning and enjoying golf in the past," says Rhonda Moret, Director of Marketing for the Nike Golf Learning Centers. "Thousands of new golfers have been introduced to the game through this innovative format, and more importantly, most of those new golfers have become avid players. We invite both juniors and adults to try one of our programs and see for themselves what the excitement is all about."
The Nike Golf Learning Centers' Tee It Up group instruction program offers new golfer, intermediate and advanced levels, so that students learn alongside others of their own ability and progress at their own pace.
Tee It Up 1 for the new golfer is designed to put the fun back into learning. The program offers a comprehensive introduction to golf package that includes six hours of instruction encompassing chipping, putting and full-swing fundamentals, five rounds of golf, membership in the American Golf Players Association, a USGA introduction to golf videotape, and a bag tag. The program also includes golf facility and course tours, equipment overview, state-of-the-art video analysis, practice drills, instruction on rules and etiquette, information on the importance of pace of play, and "transition to play" on-course instruction.
New golfers who complete Tee it Up 1 are invited to special weekly new golfer "play-days" where they can play on the course with other new golfers and at the same time receive follow-up coaching from the pro. Tee It Up 2 for intermediate golfer and Tee It Up 3 for advanced players are also available.
The Nike Golf Learning Centers are so confident their new instructional format will work, that they guarantee students will be able to play on-course after six hours of instruction or they may repeat the program free of charge.
Nike Golf Learning Centers offer a variety of specialized programs including "women-only" classes, corporate programs, and its popular Nike Junior Golf Camps. There are currently Nike Golf Learning Centers operational at American Golf courses in markets including, but not limited to; Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Orlando, Portland, New York, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, and in North and South Carolina. More than 130 Nike Golf Learning Centers are expected to open within the next several years.
