Credits Natural Golf Swing for his third place at Dunhill Links Contact Rick Johnson MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (October 7, 2002) - Sandy Lyle finished in a tie for third place in the Dunhill Links Championship yesterday for his highest finish since 1992, when he won the Lancia Martini Italian Open and the Volvo Masters. "It just seemed to all gel together this week," said Lyle, who credits his switch to the Natural Golf swing as the reason for his improved play in the last two years. "It was good, old-fashioned links golf out there, and it was fun." Lyle's tie for third moved him up to 35th on the European Tour's all-time earnings list and from 134th to 54th on the 2002 European Tour list, and assured him of continued exempt status on the tour for the 2003 season. Until this week, Lyle was in danger of losing his exempt status. Lyle's scores of 69, 67, 67 and 68 at the Dunhill Links was only the third time in the last 10 years that he has shot all four rounds under 70. His other sub-70 rounds for an entire tournament were in 1996 and 1993, both on the PGA Tour. "My ball control was good [this week], and I didnĒt put myself in too much danger," Lyle said. "Some of my [past trouble] has been bad decisions, but I've also had some bad luck, where you hit a tree and it bounces out of bounds or behind another tree - things like that." Lyle, who began learning and playing Natural Golf in early 2000 in an attempt to rejuvenate his golf game, will try to extend his solid play this week when he participates in the Trophee Lancome tournament in Paris, France.
