Steve Watters LAS VEGAS (May 16, 2002) - For the first time in Las Vegas, sports figure Magic Johnson will hold a golf tournament to benefit The Magic Johnson Foundation, and sports celebrity Mike Maddux will hold his second annual golf tournament to raise funds for the Maddux Foundation. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who has five NBA championship rings, is hosting The Magic Johnson Foundation Celebrity Golf Invitational Oct. 18-20. Mike Maddux, who retired from baseball as a pitcher for the Houston Astros in 2000 and is a pitching coach for their farm team, will host the 2nd Annual Las Vegas Celebrity Golf Classic Nov. 7-10. This event will be presented in part by Sunset Station Hotel & Casino. Both charity golf tournaments, presented by Entertainment Sponsorships Inc., have various sponsorship opportunities and are open to any golfer. Fees are $2,250 for the Maddux tournament and $3,500 for the Magic Johnson event. Both include a hotel room, the pairings party, tournament golf, breakfast and lunch each day, tee prizes, the awards dinner, and transportation. Numerous other sponsorships are available at various investment levels. Proceeds from each event will go toward their targeted foundations. "My foundation has made a strong commitment to defeat the hopelessness that can destabilize a community," said Johnson. "Through special events, such as The Magic Johnson Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament, each attendee is contributing to our mission and the enrichment of the inner-city communities." Although Johnson is universally known for his illustrious 13-year career in the NBA, he has redefined himself as a businessman who focuses his efforts on revitalizing neglected communities. Maddux founded the Maddux Foundation in October 2000 to help under-privileged children receive dental and vision care. His foundation's first tournament was held last year, with donations going to the Las Vegas Boys & Girls Club. "The Maddux Foundation works to support the underserved youth of Southern Nevada," Maddux said. "We recognize and are committed to Southern Nevada's most valuable resource, our children."
