PHOENIX (August 26, 2002) - PING will soon introduce a family of 16 new putters
in a move to enhance its classic designs of tour-proven, winning putter models.
Named the G2 series,
the project involves taking the most popular PING(R) putters of all time and improving
the already good inertia weighting by as much as 20 per cent. By doing this, the
great lines of each model were kept and actually squared even more for a real
clean look, including the ANSER, PAL, B60, ZING' and MY DAY. Several new models
are also being introduced.
The ANSER, PAL, B60, ZING and MY DAY putters have accounted for more than 1,000
wins on the major professional tours worldwide in the past 35 years, according
to the company.
Overseeing the project is John K. Solheim, PING vice president of engineering,
who named the putters G2 because many are the second generation of PING's winning
models. "Every factor
that we deem important in the design of a putter has been greatly improved in
the G2 putter family," said Solheim. "We've increased the inertia by design, as
well as adding mass to the G2 putters. We've also lowered the center of gravity,
creating more forgiveness and better roll."
The G2 putters are tuned to provide the optimum feel when used with the latest
golf ball technology. "I'm
also excited about the OPTIGRAPHIC EFFECT of the G2 putters. They have clean,
square lines for easy set-up. This will help golfers with alignment at address
and getting their putts started at the target," said Solheim.
A visual improvement which will debut with the G2 putters is a rectangular-shaped
hosel that is set to minimize what the golfer sees at address. The new hosel improves
aesthetics and makes alignment easier.
The square appearance of the G2 putters will be accomplished in the investment
casting process -- not by grinding -- to ensure tightest tolerances. They will
be cast from 17-4 stainless steel and heat treated to achieve consistency and
tuned feel. Standard
length for the G2 putters will be 34 inches, standard lie 18 degrees and standard
loft 3 degrees. An innovative, step-less steel shaft has been developed with a
stiffer tip to achieve superb feel. It is tuned to the increased head weight of
the G2 putters.
A new G2 putter cover will be offered with each putter. Standard grip will be
the Karsten Etched grip, except for face balanced putters which will feature a
PING Finger Lock grip. All other PING putter grips are optional at no additional
charge. Following
are the 16 models of G2 putters and their distinguishing features:
