Clemson Edges ASU to Remain No. 1 in Precept Coaches Poll

Pfeiffer moves into top spot in Division II

NORMAN, Okla. (March 12, 2003) -- For the third-consecutive ranking, the Clemson Tigers have claimed the top spot in the Precept Division I Coaches Poll, edging No. 2 Augusta State for the third time this spring. Clemson (990 points) earned 19 of 42 first-place votes while Jaguars of Augusta State (946 points) received 18. Pfeiffer, ranked third previously, received 13 of 24 first-place votes to move to No. 1 in the Precept Division II Coaches Poll.

There was no movement in the top four of the Division I poll with TCU, who earned one first-place vote, and Florida following Clemson and Augusta State. Wake Forest received their first No. 1 vote of the spring to vault two places to fifth. Arizona and UNLV, who also received a first-place vote, each dropped a spot to sixth and seventh, respectively. Texas comes in at No. 8 and is followed by UCLA and Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, winners of two straight, earned the remaining first-place vote.

Minnesota drops a spot to No. 11 and is followed by Georgia. Georgia Tech and North Carolina tied at No. 13. Duke, New Mexico, NC State, Oklahoma, Northwestern and Illinois round out the top 20. Auburn reentered the poll at No. 23 and is joined by Washington (No. 21), Pepperdine (22), College of Charleston (24) and Southern California in the top 25.

Michigan State dropped out of the rankings.

In Division II, West Florida followed Pfeiffer to earn the No. 2 ranking. UC-Davis and South Carolina-Aiken tied for third with previous No. 1 Cal State-Stanislaus dropping to fifth. Cal-State Bakersfield, Rollins College, Colorado-Colorado Springs, Florida Southern and North Alabama round out the top 10. Rollins College made the biggest move in the poll climbing 15 spots to seventh.

Francis Marion remains at No. 11 and is joined by Chico State, Grand Canyon, Kennesaw State, and Central Oklahoma in the top 15. Delta State drops a spot to No. 16 and is followed by Cal-State San Bernardino, Abilene Christian and Cameron. Newcomers Georgia State College & State University and Armstrong Atlantic debut at Nos. 20 and 21, respectively. Central Arkansas, Drury, Western Washington and Grand Valley State comprise the rest of the top 25.

UC-San Diego and Ferris State fell from the Division II rankings.

To vote in the Precept Coaches poll, a coach must be a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The next Precept Coaches poll will be released March 26 and will contain rankings for from all three NCAA divisions.
