PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (April 2, 2002) -- Inspired by the legacy of one of the game's premier instructors, The PGA of America has created the Paul Runyan Collegiate Golf Management Scholarship, PGA of America officials have announced. This annual award of $5,000 will go to a junior in The PGA's Professional Golf Management program, which is offered at 13 universities or colleges nationwide. The scholarship's namesake, Paul Runyan, died March 17 at age 93. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a two-time winner of the PGA Championship and Senior PGA Championship, Runyan was chosen one of Golf Magazine's Top 50 Teachers. "Paul Runyan's legacy in golf goes beyond a wonderful playing record to the lesson tee, where he excelled to another level, brining enjoyment to many and inspiration to PGA Professionals," said PGA of America President Jack Connelly. "It is the hope of The PGA that this scholarship will assist many aspiring golf professionals who will reflect Paul's devotion to the game." The Paul Runyan Collegiate Golf Management Scholarship is based on college juniors enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program; grade point average requirements at their respective university or college; completing the Level I Golf Professional Training Program checkpoint, PGM and community involvement and the submission of a paper discussing the significance of the scholarship bearing Paul Runyan's name. PGM directors at the participating college or university will nominate candidates who will be reviewed by the PGA Scholarship Committee. The PGA of America will honor the 2002 Paul Runyan Collegiate Golf Management Scholarship winner during The PGA's State of the Association news conference, Aug. 14, at the 84th PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Donations may be made to: The Paul Runyan Scholarship Fund, c/o The PGA Foundation, 100 Avenue of the Champions, P.O. Box 109601, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410-9601. | ||
